Wayfarer

A sun-filled coastal home on the Mornington Peninsula — designed around light, landscape and the freedom to come and go.

Wayfarer is a new coastal home set within the residential strip of St Andrews Beach on the Mornington Peninsula. Within its 136.5m² GFA, three bedrooms, open plan living, dining and kitchen, and an extra-large caravan bay are all held under a single sweeping roof.

The brief was shaped by the owners' love of travel with their large caravan. Rather than treating the caravan as a practical afterthought, the design embraces it as part of the facade. The bay is integrated directly into the street frontage so the caravan becomes a visible and honest expression of how the owners actually live, with the whole street elevation reading as one settled, coherent gesture — and it remains easy to hitch up and head off without fuss.

The house was designed around light, landscape and the freedom to come and go. The main living space is oriented to the north, drawing deep natural light throughout the day and opening directly to the outdoor entertaining areas and garden beyond — a passive solar approach that makes the most of every season.

Bedrooms are arranged along the western boundary, each maintaining privacy from the main living areas while turning toward the garden and dunes beyond. The study lounge doubles as a guest bedroom when extended family or visitors arrive. The living space spills outward to the covered verandah, designed to be used in all but the worst coastal weather.

The exterior is defined by masonry block and Colorbond metal — Shale Grey on the roof, Surfmist on the gutters and downpipes. Robust, low-maintenance and well suited to coastal conditions, together they settle into a muted sandy palette that ties the home to its surroundings without announcing itself.

Environmental performance is woven through every decision. Passive solar orientation draws northern light deep through the plan, paired with high-performance uPVC windows and doors that hold tight against coastal weather and the BAL-29 bushfire site.
